Referee hauls players off pitch moments before huge PSV vs Ajax clash in infamous De Topper rivalry

AJAX’S Eredivisie clash with PSV Eindhoven was delayed due to flares being let off in the crowd.

The heavyweight match-up, known locally as De Topper, is one of Holland’s most-anticipated each season.

With kick-off fast approaching, the atmosphere inside Philips Stadium was electric.

As the players stood ready to start the match, the referee was forced to pause due to smoke from flares let off in the crowd floating over the pitch.

After considering the situation, whistler Serdar Gozubuyuk summoned players to return to their respective dressing rooms.

Kick-off was subsequently delayed for around 10 minutes in order for the smoke to clear.

When the action finally got underway, what followed was a topsy-turvy encounter between two of the title favourites.

Ismael Saibari headed home Ivan Perisic’s pinpoint cross on seven minutes to fire the home side into the lead.

Kenneth Taylor levelled from the penalty spot shortly after the half hour, with Sergino Dest adjudged to have fouled Oliver Edvardsen in the box following a VAR check.

Yarek Gasiorowski got on the end of Mauro Junior’s delivery to reclaim PSV’s lead with barely 10 minutes left.

But as the clock ebbed towards 90, Oscar Gloukh nutmegged home keeper Matej Kovar for a share of the spoils.

The draw leaves PSV second in the table on 13 points, one ahead of third-placed Ajax.

Feyenoord are top of the pile after six games, having so far collected 16 points.

The Rotterdam side dramatically dropped their first points of the season earlier today, with Mexx Meerdink scoring a 98th minute penalty to earn AZ Alkmaar a 3-3 draw, following a red card for former Sheffield United defender Anel Anhmedhodzic.
