MICHAEL McGOVERN’S wife Leanne has tragically passed away.
The former Celtic goalkeeper and his partner had two children together, Kieran and Meaghan.
McGovern’s former club Ross County posted a tribute on X, formerly Twitter, to Leanne.
They said: “Everyone at Ross County Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of Leanne McGovern, beloved wife of our former goalkeeper Michael McGovern.
“Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with Michael, his family, and all who knew Leanne at this incredibly difficult time.”
And Queen’s Park, the club where McGovern recently served as goalkeeping coach, also wished him the best on X.
They posted: “All at Queen’s Park send our deepest condolences to the club’s former goalkeeping coach Michael McGovern, after learning of the passing of his wife Leanne.
“Our thoughts are with you Michael, and with all the family, at this sad time.”
McGovern began his career at Celtic, spending seven years there but not making any first-team appaearances.
He moved to Dundee United but didn’t play for them either, going on to play for Ross County, Falkirk and Hamilton.
He transferred down south and spent seven years with Norwich City, before returning to Scotland with Hearts, Livingston and Queen‘s Park in the later years of his career.
The Northern Irishman revealed exclusively to SunSport last year that he had met Leanne on a night out whilst at Celtic – and discovered that she supported Rangers!
He said: “I met Leanne on a Celtic Christmas night out in Glasgow when I was 21.
“We got married in 2011 at Glenbervie House.
“Kieran’s 11 and a big Celtic fan, Meghan is eight and a Rangers fan.
“Leanne’s actually a Rangers fan too and so is her dad, so there can be a bit of fun on Old Firm days.
“Kieran plays for the Charlie Miller Academy while Meghan turns out for Cambuslang Soccer Centre, but neither are keepers.”
