NEWCASTLE get their Champions League campaign underway against Barcelona TONIGHT.
The Magpies failed to get out of the group stage when they last featured in Europe’s elite competition during the 2023/24 season.
Newcastle finished bottom of the ‘group of death’ that contained European powerhouses PSG, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.
Now, the Champions League has a fresh format for the opening stage and the Toon will get to experience the new league phase for the first time this term.
Eddie Howe’s side have a tricky start against Spanish champions Barcelona – but the Toon boss has been handed a welcome boost for tonight’s game.
Why is Anthony Gordon not suspended for Newcastle vs Barcelona?
Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk during Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win away at Newcastle last month.
The England winger was subsequently banned for three matches and has since missed games against Leeds and Wolves.
Gordon remains suspended for one more match, but his ban only applies to domestic competitions and not the Champions League, meaning he is available for selection against Barcelona this evening.
The winger will complete his suspension on Sunday as the Magpies travel to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The former Everton man will next be able to play domestically on Wednesday, September 24, as Newcastle host Bradford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
