GB3 race winner Macintyre steps back from racing after cancer diagnosis

GB3 race winner Will Macintyre has been forced to step back from competing after being diagnosed with cancer.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a successful career since graduating from karts to cars in 2022, finishing runner-up in Ginetta Junior in his first season and repeating that position in the following year’s British Formula 4 standings.

He currently sits fifth in this season’s GB3 table with two events remaining, having joined Elite Motorsport for his sophomore GB3 campaign.

However, his season has been cut short following the shock brain and lung cancer diagnosis.
Macintyre is receiving treatment at Milton Keynes University Hospital and says he is determined to return to racing as soon as possible.

He wrote on social media: “This is a very different post to usual, but I’ll just spit it out. Over the past few months, I haven’t quite felt myself and now it’s starting to make a bit more sense as to why.

“I’ve been diagnosed with both brain and lung cancer. Sadly, it’s as serious as it sounds!

“The amazing team at Milton Keynes Hospital have already been incredible in helping put a plan together for how I’m going to fight this.

“Unfortunately, this does mean I won’t be racing for the foreseeable future. But rest assured, the second I’m able to, I’ll be back behind the wheel where I belong.

“A massive thank you goes to my family and friends for their support and to everyone who continues to back me through this unexpected detour.”

Macintyre drove for Elite Motorsport in Ginetta Junior as well as in GB3 and the team said in a statement: “Anyone who knows Will knows the strength and determination he carries both on and off the track.

“As a team, our priority is to support Will and his family through every step of this challenge.”

Autosport sends its best wishes to Macintyre for a speedy recovery.
