Bayern vs Chelsea preview
A beauty of a Champions League tie upon us so early with a repeat of the 2012 final.
Chelsea head to Bayern on Wednesday for their first game in this competition since a quarter final showing in the 2022/23 campaign.
The ‘world champions’ have started their Premier League season unbeaten with two wins and two draws from their four games heading into this one.
It looked a perfect London derby comeback on Saturday when striking with five minutes to go to turn the game around at Brentford, only for Alejandro Garnacho to drop his man at a long throw and allow Fabio Carvalho to equalise three minutes into stoppage time.
They begin their European quest with a difficult game against a Bayern side who were knocked out of this competition in the quarters last year to eventual runners-up Inter but have started this season strongly.
They’re the only side with a 100% Bundesliga record after three games and have scored a stunning 14 goals in those three outings.
Bayern were 4-1 winners when the sides last met in 2020 in the last-8 of this competition, having also won 3-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge for a dominant aggregate scoreline.

The inclusion of Luis Diaz to the Bayern front three has taken them up yet another level and their scoring record proves so.
14 goals in three Bundesliga games and three more in their German Cup game totals 17 in four competitive outings this season and with home support behind them, that could continue here.
Chelsea had only conceded once in three games before the two goals at the Gtech on Saturday but this is quite a considerable step up from their kind fixture start in the league and that could show.

In the book
Jorrel Hato would be a fantastic bet at 17/5 to be carded if I believed he was going to start, having been carded in both of his last two outings, despite a combined 70 minutes across those appearances.
Given he was hooked at half time last time out, that would appear unlikely so it’s across the back four and to Reece James for this one, with the Blues skipper picking up a yellow card already this season and directly up against Luis Diaz.
Again, had more minutes in the England games than he’s been given in any one Chelsea game but if given a start, will be keen to show he can be trusted from the offset but a difficult evening anticipated.
