Michael Carrick, 44, lands new job three months after Man Utd legend’s Middlesbrough sacking

MICHAEL CARRICK has landed a new role as a pundit on Prime Video just three months after his sacking as Middlesbrough manager.

The 44-year-old former Manchester United and England midfielder is set to bring his expertise to the screen when Tottenham host Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Carrick’s new role as a pundit is a fresh chapter following a turbulent managerial stint at the Riverside.

He took over at Middlesbrough in October 2022, succeeding Chris Wilder.

Early signs were positive with the team showing improvement under his leadership as he guided the team to a play-off finish in 2022-23.

Fans hoped the former United legend could push them back to the Premier League but they finished outside the top six in the following two seasons.

The former Red Devils star’s tenure ended prematurely in June 2025 after a series of inconsistent performances.

While the decision was met with some surprise, Boro’s hierarchy decided that a change was necessary to kick-start their promotion push.

Carrick enjoyed 12 glorious years at Manchester United, winning a staggering five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the coveted Champions League in 2008.

As a midfield maestro, he was known for his calm composure, precise passing and ability to dictate the tempo of the game.

A product of West Ham United’s youth system, Carrick made a significant move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004 before joining United in 2006 for a £14million fee.

He earned 34 caps for England over the course of his international career, making his debut in 2001.

He was a regular fixture in the England squad for a decade, representing his country in multiple major tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

After retiring from playing in 2018 – as well as appearing in legends games – Carrick took up a coaching role at United, where he was part of the staff under Jose Mourinho and later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

His brief spell as interim manager following Solskjaer sacking in 2021 was a highlight of his coaching career, with Carrick guiding the team to victories over Villarreal and Arsenal before stepping down to focus on his role as a coach under Ralf Rangnick.

As a pundit, he will join a team of top-class analysts, including former team-mate Dimitar Berbatov, for Spurs’ first Champions League game.
