Ruben Amorim fires parting shot at Andre Onana after exit of Man Utd flop who refused to acknowledge manager

RUBEN AMORIM believes Andre Onana found the pressure too much at Manchester United and needed a change.

The Cameroon international was allowed to join Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan for the season following the arrival of Senne Lammens at Old Trafford.

SunSport exclusively revealed this week that Amorim believes Onana’s exit has cleared Man Utd of negative influences after their relationship broke down ahead of the campaign.

It emerged that insiders felt Onana was showing a lack of involvement and interest in working for the team in the final days before the international break.

That included him effectively refusing to even acknowledge his manager in training.

Now Amorim has opened up on why he thinks things haven’t worked out as planned with the shot-stopper.

Despite a campaign that was riddled with errors last season, Onana returned to Carrington in July expecting to be No1.

But he missed much of pre-season due to injury and then, when he was fit, Altay Bayindir took his place.

When Onana did get his chance at Grimsby, he made two blunders as the League Two team secured a famous victory.

And when Lammens arrived from Antwerp on deadline day, a decision was taken that Onana needed to move on.

Amorim said: “We saw Andre had a very, very good season at Inter. The quality is there.

“But we are in the club and sometimes, in the moment, things can get harder and harder.

Why Man United Could Play Midweek Friendlies Abroad

“You can be really experienced but in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail.

“I think we understood that this needed a change. Sometimes it’s hard to point why. It’s the performance, the moments.

“The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.”

Onana will spend the year in Turkey and Amorim hopes he can return to the level that persuaded Erik ten Hag to sign him.

He added:  “I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players.

“Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level.

“That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre.”

Amorim confirmed that, despite Lammens’ deadline day arrival, it will be Altay Bayindir who starts between the sticks for this weekend’s Manchester Derby.

While he also revealed that Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot will all be unavailable for the match due to injury issues.
