Will Canelo and Crawford Live Up to Hype?

When WBC, WBO, and IBF Super Middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defends his titles against WBO Interim Super Welterweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford Saturday over Netflix, will it live up to the hype?

In Crawford’s last fight in June of 2024, he barely got by defeating WBO Interim champion Israil ‘The Dream’ Madrimov, 10-0-1, of Uzbekistan by scores of 115-113 twice and 116-112. Instead of a rematch, Madrimov in February of 2025 challenged for the WBC Interim title, losing to Vergel Ortiz, Jr., 22-0, losing by scores of 115-113 twice and 117-111.

Crawford has been inactive for the past fifteen months. Canelo, on the other hand, last fought in May of 2025, defeating Cuban Wiliam ‘El Indomable’ Scull, 23-0 out of Germany by scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 119-109.

Canelo weighed 167 ¾ for that fight, while Crawford weighed a career high 153 ½ in his last fight.

Canelo at 63-2-2 with 39 stoppages out of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Sherman Oaks, California, at age 35. Crawford at 41-0 with 31 stoppages out of Omaha, Nebraska, at age 38.

Most fans would like to see Canelo fight WBC champion David ‘The Monster Bandera Roja, 30-0 with 24 stoppages out of Las Vegas, who is scheduled to fight Anthony Yarde, 27-3 with 24 stoppages out of the UK, on November 22nd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Most fans would like to see Crawford fight IBF welterweight and even the IBO Welterweight title in 2020 champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, 34-0 with 30 stoppages out of Philadelphia, PA, who would be moving up to super welterweight on October 11th against Uisma Lima, 14-1 with 10 stoppages. Lima won his last three fights against unbeaten opponents.

Trence Crawford: “I think fights like this make the sport grow, with the best vs. the best. It’s going to be spent in the history books, and the debate is going to be over,” said Crawford during today’s final press conference.

“I’ve got something no one has ever done, and that’s to become a three-time undisputed champion. I’m going to be the first time doing it three times. We know why we took this fight. We know what we’re up against.”

Canelo Alvarez: “You’re going to see all of my elements in this fight and I’m going to show why I’m the best.”

Trainer: Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre: “I just think we’re the better fighter.”
