‘There’s not much ability there’ – Jamie Carragher savages Man Utd flop branded ‘worst ever signing’

JAMIE CARRAGHER savaged a Manchester United flop branded the club’s “worst-ever signing” by insisting: “There’s not much ability there.”

Carragher, 47, joined Paul Scholes for the latest The Overlap Fan Debate following the conclusion of the transfer window.

And the conversation turned to Jadon Sancho, with one supporter suggesting he is the biggest waste of cash in the club’s history.

United spent £73million on Sancho to land him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but he has managed just 12 goals and six assists in 83 appearances for the Red Devils.

Other notable candidates for the unwanted accolade at Old Trafford include £85.5m Antony, £90m Romelu Lukaku and £59m Angel Di Maria.

But Carragher refused to disagree with the fan’s claim that Sancho, 25, deserves it – and dropped a scathing assessment of the winger.

The former Liverpool defender told Sky Bet’s The Overlap: “It’s funny with Jadon Sancho.

“Back when he was at Borussia Dortmund, Gary Neville and I were on a show where we had to pick an England squad.

“We hadn’t seen too much of him – he was doing well in the Champions League, but we left him out.

“Everyone on social media was saying, ‘How can you not pick Sancho?’

“I’m still not sure there’s that much ability there.

“He’s okay, but I don’t really see what his standout quality is.

Jadon Sancho joins Aston Villa on loan

“With Marcus Rashford, even though I’ve criticised him, I can picture his pace, his shooting, his free-kicks, the power he puts into the ball.

“With Sancho, I just don’t know what his thing is – I can’t picture it in my head.”

The fan added that Sancho has an “ability to dribble in tight spaces”, but Carragher refuted the suggestion.

He replied: “I’ve never seen it in my life. I haven’t.”

Sancho was part of Ruben Amorim’s unwanted ‘Bomb Squad’ over the summer after Chelsea paid £5m NOT to sign him permanently following his loan spell.

But the former England man sealed a loan switch to Aston Villa on deadline day, much to Scholes’ confusion.

Scholes said: “Unai Emery might be good for him, but he is a weird signing.

“We talked about the size of pitch might be an issue for him, Villa Park is massive. A lack of pace, a lack of legs, it concerns you.

“He has got ability, but what is his strength? Does he cut inside and smash it in the top corner? Can he beat a man? He possibly links with a centre forward.

“[Turning back after beating defenders] is a pace issue.

“He probably has the skill to go past someone, but they catch him. He can’t go on again.”

Sancho – who has taken the No19 at Villa Park – could make his Villa debut away at Everton on Saturday.

And while his parent club failed to qualify for any Uefa competition this season, on-loan Sancho will be part of the Europa League campaign.
