How Perez’s Cadillac F1 interview convinced team away from young driver

Cadillac Formula 1 team CEO Dan Towriss says Sergio Perez was so impressive during his interview with the squad that he convinced them to hire him over a younger driver.

During an interview with Sky Sports F1, Towriss discussed the decision-making process behind finding his team’s drivers for its 2026 Formula 1 entry, having signed Perez alongside Valtteri Bottas, and why Cadillac chose the Mexican over a younger option.

When asked about the specific questions put to Perez during his interview, the American explained that they focused on the motivation behind his possible return.

“[We asked] do you want to race again? Just where was he at in his career? What were his aspirations?” Towriss revealed. “And was he excited about the project? And what was he looking to do? What did he have left to prove in his career?”

The interview was so impressive, in fact, that it swayed the team’s management away from choosing a rookie driver.

“As we went through that meeting, those experiences really came through. I mean, he nailed the meeting. We left really excited about his candidacy,” he said. “I think probably before that, maybe we’re looking at a younger driver. But he was fantastic. And the experience really starts to separate itself from those who haven’t been in the seat yet.”

The General Motors-backed team confirmed in August that both Perez and Bottas would join the team for its inaugural F1 campaign in 2026.

Many were surprised by the fact they chose two senior drivers, but with a combined 527 grand prix starts and 16 race wins, it’s difficult to argue with their choice.

“Signing two very experienced racers like Bottas and Checo is a bold signal of intent,” team principal Graeme Lowdon said upon the confirmation of the drivers’ contracts. “They’ve seen it all and they know what it takes to succeed in Formula 1.

“But more importantly, they understand what it means to help build a team.

“Their leadership, feedback, race-hardened instincts and of course their speed will be invaluable as we bring this team to life. A big thank you to the team at Mercedes for their cooperation and understanding.”
