English football’s longest EVER away trip record broken – with epic feat set to be beaten twice more this season

ENGLAND’s fifth-tier football has broken the longest away trip record.

Truro City have made the mega journey of nearly 900 miles when they headed up north to take on Carlisle United for today’s match.

It is a round trip of over 14 hours for the Cornwall-based side to make its way to Cumbria and back.

The National League side has had to get used to life on the road with their closest home game being against Yeovil Town.

The match against the Glovers is still a 280-mile and five-hour round trip.

Truro’s most passionate fans who make all the away games will rack up 14,298 miles of travelling.

The match against Carlisle will beat the current record for an away day in an English league fixture.

That was set with the trips between Newcastle United and Plymouth Argyle in the 2009/10 Championship season.

It is expected 50 fans have made the mega-journey to watch the match at Brunton Park.

However, there was no train early enough to get them there on time, which means it would have either been a car or a plane.

Truro’s head of media Gareth Davies claimed that the match has had more interest as fans want to be able to boast that they made the trip.

He told The Times: “One fan said to me it was his mission to attend all 46 games this season.

EXCLUSIVE: I trained with an EFL team – I almost fainted and the drills were so complex, it’s a far-cry from Sunday League

“Some people might say a trip to Carlisle fills them with dread but we feel absolutely the opposite.

“Weirdly, the Carlisle game will be one of the bigger away attendances for our fans despite the distance.

“It is a bucket-list game for a lot of our fans, a badge of honour so they can say, ‘I went to Carlisle’.”

Truro earned promotion to England’s fifth tier last season as they won the National League South last term.

Carlisle manager and former Manchester United star Mark Hughes had sympathy with Truro’s journey in his pre-match press conference.

He said: “It’s not going to be easy for them but, like ourselves – we’re used to travelling big distances – it becomes second nature in terms of the logistics of it.

“I’m sure they’ve got a clear play in terms of how they can best get up here in a timely fashion and in the right physical frame.

“We pride ourselves in terms of how we approach long-distance travel and at the moment that’s working for us.

“I’m sure they’re well adverse to what’s required [too] when they do go on these long trips.

However, Truro will have two more away trips this season that are even longer.

The match against Gateshead will be an epic 930-mile round trip and will take almost FIFTEEN HOURS.

They will also have a slug up to Hartlepool which is an 890-mile round trip and will take 14 hours and 24 minutes.

Truro City’s five longest away trips this season

Here is a look at Truro City’s longest away days they are set for this season…

  • Gateshead: 14 hr 54 min, 930 miles
  • Hartlepool United: 14 hr 24 min, 890 miles
  • Carlisle United: 14 hr 14 min, 878 miles
  • York City: 12 hr 56 min, 798 miles
  • Morecambe: 12 hr 24 min, 760 miles
