Money, Trolling, and Indifference: The Mayweather-Tyson Promotion Nobody Asked For

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in fine form, trolling his “Haters” on social media, celebrating his announced exhibition match against Mike Tyson for Spring 2026. Mayweather didn’t give any hints about the PPV cost. Given that he’s facing the hugely popular former heavyweight champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, the pay-per-view price could be high.

Selling a Slower Fight

Since retiring in 2017, Mayweather has fought eight exhibition matches against a mix of YouTubers, reality TV star, kickboxer, a sparring partner, and MMA fighters. The 59-year-old Mike Tyson could prove to be the biggest one in terms of bringing in revenue. We’ll see.

Both have been retired for so long that it’s questionable whether older fans and the younger ones will be interested in paying to watch two middle-aged feable ex-fighters spar. Tyson looked poor in his eight-round unanimous decision loss to Jake Paul on November 15, 2024.

Tyson turns 60 on June 30, 2026. Mayweather will be 49 years old on February 24. To get younger fans to be willing to order an exhibition match between them, it’s going to require a lot of promotional work. These two won’t resonate with younger fans, who have better things to do than pay high PPV prices for a non-entertaining fight that lacks drama.

“I’m pretty sure I’d be upset too if I was somebody else. I’d be mad at Mayweather, too. How the f*** for 29 years or 30 years, you can keep getting money like this,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr. on social media, showing off big stacks of cash following the announcement of his exhibition match against Mike Tyson for spring 2026.

The Indifferent Audience

Mayweather has misjudged fans. They’re not mad at him for choosing to fight another exhibition match. He’s been fighting them all along since he retired in 2017. The fans on X are indifferent. They don’t seem to care, as Floyd has been out of the sport for too many years. He’s no longer relevant.

“I’d be mad too. I’d be hating on Mayweather, too,” said Floyd, playing his villian character to perfection. “Continue to hate. People only talk about winners. I’m a winner. So continue to talk. Keep the bread [money stacks] fresh. Put it in the bag. Call me the bread man. Tip money,” said Floyd, stuffing cash in his pocket.

Trolling for Attention

Fans who used to follow Mayweather years ago are accustomed to his flashing money and showing off his jewelry and expensive cars. He’s not going to get much reaction with his attempts at attracting artificial interest in his exhibition fight by trolling.

“Crocodile phone. Himalayan phone. Crocodile bags,” said Mayweather, flaunting some of his possessions in what appears to be a transparent attempt to make fans envious of him. “This is my life, man. We back. We back. My football is green. My loves are green. I got to paint my plane green.

“If Mike Tyson looks as feeble as he did against Jake Paul, it’s hard to imagine Floyd Mayweather losing this fight. Then again, it’s hard to imagine these guys trying to hurt each other,” said journalist Josh Peter of USA Today Sports.
