Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony facing 4-6 week IL stint due to oblique strain

Boston Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony is heading to the injured list and could miss the rest of the regular season, manager Alex Cora said Wednesday.

Appearing on “WEEI Afternoons,” Cora said the recently extended outfielder is dealing with an oblique strain and looking at a four-to-six-week absence.

“He’s going on the IL. He has an oblique strain,” Cora said. “Timetable, we don’t know … usually takes from 4-6 weeks.”

Anthony left Tuesday’s 11-7 win over the Cleveland Guardians due to left oblique tightness. After striking out in the bottom of the fourth inning, he walked back to the Red Sox’s dugout, grabbing his lower back after swinging at strike three.

He underwent an MRI on Wednesday, which confirmed the injury.

Anthony sat out two games last month due to mid-back tightness.

“This is definitely worse in terms of the way it feels, but that’s right now,” he said.

Since being called up in June, the 21-year-old Anthony has hit eight home runs, driven in 32 runs and batted .292 in 71 games.

“He’s one of our best offensive players,” Cora said. “It sounds harsh, but we have to move on. We’ve got to put that uniform on today and try to win a game. We’ve been through this before. There’s been a lot of stuff with this team, and we’ve been able to keep going, so I expect the group to keep doing the same thing.”

The Red Sox have 22 games left in the regular season and are tied with the New York Yankees and 2.5 games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays entering play Wednesday. Boston currently holds one of the three AL wild-card spots.

Sept. 28 is the regular-season finale, which means Anthony will likely not be available until the wild-card round, should Boston qualify.
