Barrie Thomas dead at 88: Newcastle pay emotional tribute to former star who scored 50 goals in 78 games

NEWCASTLE legend Barrie Thomas has died at the age of 88.

The Magpies announced Thomas’ passing with an emotional tribute to the iconic striker’s celebrated career.

The Measham-born icon spent two years with the Toon and shone bright with a staggering 50 goals in 78 appearances until his departure in 1964.

The legendary centre-forward, who cost the Geordies a record fee back in 1962, started his career in 1954 when he played for Leicester.

Thomas moved to Mansfield Town in 1957 before undergoing his first stint with Scunthorpe two years later.

After his successful spell at Newcastle, he returned to the Iron for another two years.

Thomas’ career came to an end at Barnsley where he spent two seasons until 1968.

Tributes poured in for the popular player after his sad passing.

Newcastle posted: “Newcastle United are saddened to hear of the death of former centre-forward Barrie Thomas at the age of 88.

“Barrie cost United a record fee when moving to the North East and was prolific in front of goal for the Magpies, scoring 50 times in 78 competitive appearances.

“The club’s thoughts are with Barrie’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Scunthorpe wrote: “Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former forward Barrie Thomas at the age of 88.

“The Iron’s second highest all-time league goalscorer with 93 goals across two spells, and third in the all-time overall standings with 96 strikes, and holds a number of club records the side, including most league goals in a season (31 – achieved by January), and most goals in a league game (five).

“Barrie passed away on Saturday, August 30th, and the thoughts of everyone at Scunthorpe United are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

And Barnsley posted: “Barnsley Football Club are saddened to hear of the passing of former player Barrie Thomas at the age of 88.

“Thomas played for the Club between 1966 and 1968, with Barnsley being the final team in his 14-year playing career. Barrie played 43 games and scored 19 goals for the Reds.

“The thoughts of everyone at Barnsley Football Club are with Barrie’s friends and family. Once a Red, always a Red.”
