Wayne Rooney warns ‘there’s something broken’ at Man Utd as Ruben Amorim prepares for showdown talks

Wayne Rooney warns ‘there’s something broken’ at Man Utd as Ruben Amorim prepares for showdown talks

WAYNE ROONEY believes Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is at “breaking point” following his side’s shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby.

Amorim is set for showdown talks during the international break next week after United were beaten 12-11 on penalties by the League Two side at Blundell Park.

The fallen Premier League giants battled back from two goals down in the last 15 minutes to force a shootout, before being knocked out by a fourth-tier side for the first time in their history.

And the Portuguese manager’s post-match comments about his squad “speaking loudly” have left United’s all-time top scorer feeling that his former club is “broken”.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Wazza said: “The biggest concern is the manager’s words after the game were damning on the players.

“Being in a position where I’ve been in that dressing room, if your manager comes out with those words, there’s something broken.

“There’s something not right. That’s clear. The manager said that after the game and that’s clear for everyone to see.

“Even though it’s only three games into the season it’s getting to a point where it’s like, ‘what is going on?’”

The bookies have tipped Amorim to become the latest victim of United’s rinse-and-repeat sacking strategy before completing his first year at Old Trafford.

The sight of the former Sporting boss, who won two titles in Portugal, hiding in his technical area amid territorial rain on the Lincolnshire coast during the shootout seems difficult to come back from.

Despite a £200million summer spend, United are winless in their opening three games of the season and the pressure will continue mounting if they fail to beat newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday.

But Rooney thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co. will struggle to find another manager as he won’t have a list of suitors queuing at the dugout door to join the crisis club.

Ruben Amorim issues grovelling apology to Man Utd fans after Grimsby embarrassment

He said: “The problem we’ve got now is who would want to take it [manager’s job]? Which is crazy to say.

“You’ve got one of the biggest clubs in the world and you’re probably just sitting there thinking… not now.”

Rooney also indicated that Amorim, who only retired from pro football eight years ago, has found it difficult to adapt to being the manager of such a high profile club.

Wazza said: “’We forget he’s 40, he’s a young manager. Manchester United is so different to where he’s been before.

“There’s the media team, the commercial team, the fans, it’s completely different.

“There’s a pressure with United which he will never have felt before. When you’re not winning games, that starts to get to you. It looks like this was a breaking point for him.”

After the game Amorim apologised to United fans and gave an impression that he might well take the matter out of the hierarchy’s hands.

He said: “I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today.

“It should be my job to understand what happened. Again, I’m really sorry for our fans. Let’s focus on the next game.

“Guys, I would like to say very smart things and very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say and that is the biggest problem also.

“To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I’m really sorry for our fans. It’s too much sometimes.

“Something has to change, and you’re not going to change 22 players again. It’s hard to face everything. We move to the next game, then we have time to decide things.”
