DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN’s first appearance for Leeds has been dubbed the “worst debut ever”.
The striker missed THREE injury-time sitters AND a penalty as the Yorkshire side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.
Calvert-Lewin, 28, made the move to Elland Road earlier this month, having left Everton at the end of his contract last term.
He has had to wait for the cup for Daniel Farke to hand him his debut but maybe the manager should have waited longer.
The former Toffees ace, who came on in the 58th minute, could have scored a hat-trick during the closing stages but fluffed his lines at each opportunity.
Leeds would go on to rue the missed chances, having battled back to level the tie at 1-1 through Jaydon Bogle.
That was how the game ended, meaning the tie went to a penalty shoot-out.
Calvert-Lewin had the chance to right his wrongs as he was among Leeds’ takers.
However, the 11-time England international fired his effort over Ethan Horvath’s goal as Leeds lost 3-0 in the shoot-out.
He did not even have the excuse of fans putting him off behind the goal, as Hillsborough was virtually empty due to the Wednesday fans’ protesting against owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Fans hit out at Calvert-Lewin on social media as they were left deeply unimpressed by his debut.
One posted: “Got to be up there with the worst cameos ever from Dominic Calvert-Lewin?”
A second wrote: “Absolute honking footballer.”
A third commented: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a contender for the worst debut ever.”
An Everton fan said: “Have to say, it is quite nice watching Calvert-Lewin miss sitters for another team instead of us!
Another added: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin just managed to miss THREE chances from a combined total of FIVE yards.”
Calvert-Lewin took to social media himself after the game as he admitted he was not happy with his performance.
He wrote: “Very proud to make my debut for this great club tonight, but also disappointed with how it went.
“I came here to give everything and that’s what I will continue to do. Can’t wait to see you all at Elland Road.”
The striker’s errors caused Farke to apologise to supporters following Leeds’ exit from the tournament.
He said: “We have to take all of the criticism and we are self-critical because out of all the chances we should put four or five goals to bed.
“It’s always a bit annoying and you feel a bit embarrassed as a Premier League side, but we have been involved in so many games on this level, especially in the cup – this is why there are so many surprises and shock results.
“Even the team in the lower league can win such a game. It was one of those days and congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday.
“You can feel for them. We’re sorry anyhow.
“We feel a bit embarrassed that we don’t go through in such a game.
“We can just say ‘sorry’ because they made the trip and wanted to celebrate.”
Leeds will not have their name in the hat for the third round draw which has been simulated by SunSport.
The Whites will be hoping to return to winning ways they they return to Premier League action against Newcastle on Saturday.
