Naomi Osaka reveals off-court battle with ‘extremely bad’ postpartum depression after birth of baby – ‘shell of myself’

US OPEN star Naomi Osaka has revealed her off-court battle with postpartum depression.

It comes after the 27-year-old had daughter, Shai.

The Japanese tennis superstar gave birth in 2023.

She had the now toddler with ex-boyfriend and rap star Cordae.

And Osaka has opened up on her struggles in her documentary.

The doc – called Naomi Osaka: The Second Set – was released on Tubi on Sunday.

“Honestly, I also had extremely bad postpartum [depression], and I didn’t know how to deal with it that well,” she said.

“Prior to giving birth, a bunch of different people had told me about postpartum.

“But truthfully, I had thought that since I was so aware of it, I could somehow avoid the symptoms altogether.

“In no world would I ever want my daughter to think that her birth is nothing less than the biggest gift I have ever received.

“But during those early months, I felt like a shell of myself at all moments of the day.

“I no longer knew who I was anymore. It felt like everyone else had moved on and they were living in color.

“Meanwhile, my world was stuck in gray.”

Osaka takes on Greet Minnen in the first-round of the US Open this week.

The No23 seed won the Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York, in 2018 and 2020.

She also bagged the Australia Open trophies in 2019 and 2021.

The tennis star was ranked No1 in the world for 25 weeks starting in January 2021, but has struggled on her return to the court.

Emotional Osaka broke down in tears after being beaten in the French Open in May.

She felt like she had let down her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who helped Serena Williams in the past.

“As time goes on I feel like I should be doing better,” she said.

“I hate disappointing people.[Mouratoglou] goes from working with, like, the greatest player ever to, like, ‘What the f–k is this?’

“You know what I mean?”

Osaka withdrew from the French Open in 2021 after suffering “huge waves of anxiety”.
