Feeney dominates third race as championship march continues

Broc Feeney has underlined the Supercars Sprint Cup title he secured on Saturday by demolishing the field in the third and final race of the weekend in Queensland.

Polesitter Feeney launched his Triple Eight Chevrolet Camaro off the line and powered clear of the field, as not even a brief shower and a mid-race safety car could derail his quest for a 13th win of the year.

During that safety car period three drivers who were yet to make a pitstop took the opportunity to make their two mandatory stops on consecutive laps. As a result, Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters and Grove Racing’s Kai Allen, plus Brad Jones Racing’s Andre Heimgartner, swept by to push Feeney back to fourth.

But it took Feeney just three laps to advance to second place, before he retook the lead on lap 43, setting up a comfortable 20-lap charge to finish to win by 8.810s ahead of Waters and Allen.

“I am chuffed, it’s not something I can pinpoint from this year, to think of the year we have had, I would not have dreamt of that. I am loving life at the moment,” Feeney said.

“I have been speaking about [the Finals] all year, to have those bonus points is going to go a long way. It was not plain and simple out front, I had to pass some fast cars.”

It was a promising yet ultimately disappointing day for Walkinshaw Andretti United, as Chaz Mostert worked hard to get his Ford up to fourth place and team-mate Ryan Wood was not far behind him in seventh, but both were hit by penalties.

Mostert was given a five-second penalty which dropped him to sixth place, while a 15-second penalty after contact with Will Brown pushed Wood back to 22nd.

So fourth went to Grove’s Matt Payne, ahead of Brodie Kostecki (Dick Johnson Racing Ford), Mostert and Heimgartner.

Brown looked to be in contention for a podium result until the incident with Wood, and was classified 16th.

As a result Feeney now leads the points, 337 clear of Brown, with Payne another eight points back.

The next round of the championship will be at The Bend on 12-14 September, the first of two endurances races, with co-drivers stepping into the series for the first time.
