Regis Prograis Eyes Subriel Matias Title Shot, Explains Why WBC Champion’s Style Suits Him

Regis Prograis Eyes Subriel Matias Title Shot, Explains Why WBC Champion’s Style Suits Him

Regis Prograis says WBC light welterweight champion Subriel Matias is the champion who would best suit his style. Prograis (30-3, 24 KOs) wants an immediate title shot after his entertaining 10-round unanimous decision win over Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz last Saturday.

Prograis Targets Saudi Arabia Fights

If Regis, 36, can’t get one of the world champions at 140 to fight him, he wants a “big money” fight, and is interested in fighting in Saudi Arabia on one of Turki Alalshikh’s cards.

Matias has a fight scheduled against his #1 mandatory challenger, Dalton Smith, on November 22nd. If he’s victorious in that match, he’ll need to fight former WBC champion Alberto Puello next because he has a rematch clause from their fight on July 12th.

“There’s only two things I want – the belts or the big money. If I can’t get that, maybe 147,” said Regis Prograis to MillCity Boxing about his expectations after his win over Joseph Diaz last Saturday. “Ryan [Garcia] is with Golden Boy. So, why not do that?”

It’s doubtful that Prograis will be given a world title shot by any of the champions at 140, because there’s no reason for them to fight him. He’s lost two out of his last three fights, and he’s not an easy out. Ideally, what Prograis needs is for Turki to show some interest in using him on one of his events. That hasn’t happened yet.

Will Turki Pick Prograis?

“I’ll go over to Saudi and get some big money over there. At 140, they got Matias, Gary Russell, Teofimo, and Hitchins. Whichever one I can get,” said Prograis about world champions at light welterweight he could target. “I think Gary Russell or Matias.”

If Turki picked Prograis, he’d expect him to fight someone good, and that would be bad for him because his punch resistance appears to have abandoned him in his last three fights.

“No, not right now,” said Regis when asked if he’d like to fight Brian Norman Jr. at 147. “I want to do the same thing Devin did. You test the waters at 144, and then you go to 147. You could do something like that.

“Matias suits me the best,” said Prograis about which champion at light welterweight would work with his style the best.
