Whyte vs. Itauma: “Old Wolf” Dillian Aims to Prove His Teeth Are Still Sharp

Whyte vs. Itauma: “Old Wolf” Dillian Aims to Prove His Teeth Are Still Sharp

Dillian Whyte resents that he’s being viewed as the “old wolf,” ready to be replaced by a younger one, Moses Itauma, in their 12-round heavyweight clash on August 16th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs) has been chosen specifically for Itauma (12-0, 10 KOs) to be made to look great in their fight on DAZN PPV, priced at $49.99. ‘The Body Snatcher’ Whyte intends to show Itauma that he and his management picked the wrong guy because he’s going to upset him.

Dillian Resents “Written Off” Status

“I still feel there’s a lot more left for me to achieve and a lot more left for me to give. Obviously, I’ve been written off. Everyone has put me as the underdog,” said Dillian Whyte to DAZN Boxing, discussing his fight with Moses Itauma on August 16th.

As you can see, Whyte doesn’t like that he’s being “written off,” and viewed as the token victim brought in for Itauma to slaughter on August 16th in Riyadh. Dillian is new to being used as someone to make another fighter look like gold when, in fact, they might be a pure fake.

“I ain’t got nothing to prove to no one. I’m a risk-taker. I’ve always been a risk-taker. If I didn’t take risks, I wouldn’t be alive today from where I’ve come and what I’ve done,” said Whyte.

Well, Dillian actually does have something to prove. After the way he performed in his recent fights against Ebenezer Tetteh, Christian Hammer, Jermaine Franklin, and Tyson Fury, he’s viewed as 100% washed. Whatever fighter he’d been during his best years from 2016 to 2019, he’s not that guy anymore. The power remains, but he’s not performed well in many years.

“Old Wolf” Whyte’s Sharp Teeth

“They’re trying to feed the old wolf to the young wolf, but I’ll just say this. I’ve been the alpha male in the pack,” said Whyte. “I’ve been around the pack for a long time. I understand the pack mentality, but maybe as the old wolf, my teeth are still sharp. Listen, I’m out there to win, and I carry power in both hands. I’m sure he does the same. So, let’s see. I’m going to do whatever it takes to win.”

Dillian is going to have to use his power early because Itauma will finish him off quickly if he doesn’t hit him with something to put the fear in him. We saw Moses scared during his amateur days when he fought a fighter from Greece who went after him with mean intentions from the opening bell. Whyte will need to do the same thing.

“This is it. There is no tomorrow for Dillian. If you lose a fight like this, then you just become a stepping stone for other young guys,” said trainer James ‘Buddy’ McGirt to DAZN, talking about what’s at stake for his fighter, Whyte. “This is his championship fight right here.”

Whyte might as well retire if he loses to Itauma by a humiliating knockout, because his value will plummet. Those nice little paydays he’s been routinely getting will likely disappear, and he’ll find himself back to where he used to be when he first started. For a fighter with a net worth estimated at $13.2 million, it would be hard for Whyte to be reduced to getting chump change for his fights.
