Ryan Garcia’s Next Opponent: De La Hoya Rules Out Rolly Romero II, Eyes Teofimo Lopez

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya has ruled out putting on a Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero rematch next. He wants a bigger fight for Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs), one that will interest boxing fans.

De La Hoya says the Garcia-Romero fight on May 2nd at Times Square was too boring for him to do a second contest between them. Indeed, the fight was one of the dullest on that card.

De La Hoya on Garcia-Romero II

“No, I actually don’t, because the first fight was a dull fight. When you’re a promoter and you’re trying to make rematches, it’s because people want to see it,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya to DAZN Boxing when asked last Saturday if he wants to do a Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero rematch.

Why would Oscar want to make a Garcia vs. Romero 2 rematch? Ryan will likely lose badly, and it wouldn’t bring in the kind of PPV buys that other fights like a rematch with Devin Haney or a clash against Teofimo Lopez would.

Romero’s Disengaged Promotion

Rolly is not a PPV attraction, and his ability to sell his fights is lacking. We saw how Romero appeared mentally detached during his press conferences to promote his first fight with Ryan Garcia last May. He had very little to say and was equally bad at giving interviews in the lead-up to the fight. This was just before the fight.

The actual bout had little action with Rolly fighting in brief spurts, throwing one punch at a time, and afraid to mix it up. Romero should have been attacking Garcia because there was no offense coming from him at all.

Promoter Seeks Big Fights

“The first fight wasn’t that entertaining. The first fight wasn’t a big deal. So, I believe there are other opponents out there for Ryan. There are other big names out there, other big fights we can make with the likes of Teofimo and other fighters out there. First things first, I need Ryan to be in great health,” said De La Hoya.

If this is the last fight of Ryan’s contract with Golden Boy, you can’t blame De La Hoya for focusing on wanting to get the biggest money bout possible for him. Romero is NOT a fight that will hit it out of the park in terms of revenue. He would be just a non-participating, useless person to promote the fight, and it would bring in poor PPV numbers.
