49ers predicted to sign exiled former NFL QB as Brock Purdy’s backup

49ers predicted to sign exiled former NFL QB as Brock Purdy’s backup

The San Francisco 49ers just signed Brock Purdy to a gigantic contract extension. They’re hoping he never gets hurt and plays well in every game for the life of the deal.

That’s probably not realistic, though, and one NFL writer recently suggested a sneaky backup the 49ers should target.

Jordan Ta’amu has been out of the league for two seasons after spending time on the practice squads of the Chiefs, Texans, Lions and Vikings. The NFL clearly deemed him not good enough to keep around.

But now, after starring in multiple spring football leagues, Fansided’s Wynston Wilcox thinks Ta’amu should join the 49ers.

“Who’s to say Ta’amu couldn’t end up being Brock Purdy’s backup, getting a chance to play when he inevitably gets injured?” Wilcox writes. “If there’s one coach Ta’amu could benefit from playing under, it’s Kyle Shanahan.”

In 2023, Ta’amu was the XFL Offensive Player of the Year for the DC Defenders.

In 2022, he led the USFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

This season back with the Defenders in the new UFL, Ta’amu has thrown for 1,990 yards and 16 touchdowns, both tops in the league. DC is 6-2 with Ta’amu at the helm.

“There’s no better time to try and get back into the NFL as a quarterback than 2025,” Wilcox writes. “Redemption stories are popping up left and right: Sam Darnold is the most prevalent, earning his way from being a top pick, to back up to now earning $30 million a year. Same with Geno Smith.”

Ta’amu was an Ole Miss QB in college, and now, his play could earn him a backup spot somewhere in the NFL, including maybe San Francisco.
