Some progress has been made over the past few weeks on an extension for Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers have a tough decision to make with Purdy, who may be looking at around $50 million per season. Whether he’s worth that or not remains to be seen, but many have questioned that, to say the least.

The issue is that somebody else would pay Purdy the type of money he’s looking for. If the 49ers don’t want to give him a deal before he eventually hits free agency, somebody else will. They’d then be without a franchise quarterback, and while he has questions about his game, he’s run this offense at an elite level.

According to a recent report from Mike Jones of The Athletic, the 49ers are trying to get a deal done before the season to avoid any holdouts during the early parts of the year or training camp.

He added that he’s expected to land around $50 million AAV.

“For now, Purdy is slated to play the final season of his rookie contract on a salary of $5 million. The 49ers have been trying to work out a deal that gives the quarterback long-term security and also avoids any holdouts this summer or early season.

“Purdy is expected to wind up with a contract that will pay him around $50 million per season and places him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. San Francisco just reached a long-term deal with Purdy’s top target, George Kittle, that made Kittle the highest-paid tight end in NFL history. It now seems like a matter of when, not if, Purdy gets paid,” Jones wrote.

As Jones touched on, it feels like a matter of when, not if.

Purdy deserves this contract after throwing for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and just 27 interceptions in three seasons.
