A new Ring “mega-belt” was unveiled today that will be up for grabs for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford undisputed super middleweight championship fight on September 13th in Las Vegas.
$188K Ring Championship Belt
According to Rick Reeno of Ring Magazine, it is “the most expensive belt ever created.” It cost 140,000 pounds [$188,000] to create. He didn’t say if this was 24k pure gold or gold inlay. There’s a big difference.
As far as I can tell, the new belt looks almost identical to the previous one. It’s unclear how much extra gold is in the new version. Whatever changes that were made from the previous ones, I’d have to put it through a microscope and have a jeweler identify what differences are from the previous.
For the millionaires, Canelo and Crawford, having an expensive $188K gold belt. For Canelo’s estimated purse of $150 million and Crawford’s $50 million, having an expensive new Ring belt to go home with makes sense. These two are going to be the equivalent of Gilded Age millionaires from the money that they make for their September 13th fight on Netflix at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
“For a mega-fight of this magnitude, we wanted to create an exclusive mega-belt. So, we spoke to numerous companies all over the world, and eventually settled on a top-tier company in the UK,” said Rick Reeno of Ring Magazine at today’s Riyadh press conference, talking about the new belt that will be up for grabs for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight on September 13th.
Most Expensive Boxing Belt Ever
“This company often gets commissioned to create items for Kings and Queens, for jewelry, high-end metals, for the British army. For the belt that Canelo has, we spent 100,000 pounds. For this belt, we upped the ante to 140,000 pounds. This is by far the most expensive Ring belt ever created, the finest gold, the finest craftsmanship.
“Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are the two very best fighters, and there can only be one. Only one of them is going home with this belt on September 13th.”
That is an incredible amount of money for a belt. I wonder if any of the sanctioning bodies, like the WBC can create a similar one to put on the lines for their fights.
